Discover the Best Beaches in Krabi: A Tropical Paradise
Krabi, located in southern Thailand, on the shore of the Andaman Sea, is a treasure trove of stunning beaches and islands. After spending three weeks in Thailand, we’ve compiled a list of the best beaches in Krabi to visit. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or a beautiful spot to watch the sunset, Krabi has it all. Let’s dive into best beaches in Krabi you must experience!
1. Railay Beach
Railay Beach is often hailed as one of the best beaches in Krabi. Famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs, clear waters and powdery sands. The beach is isolated by limestone cliffs and accessible only by longtail boat from Ao Nang or other nearby beaches. There’s also a local market, bars and restaurants all selling local Thai cuisine. It’s obvious why this is such a popular must-visit spot! But it’s not just the beautiful scenery that draws people here from all over. There’s a whole host of activities you can do, whatever your interests.
Things to do at Railay Beach
Rock Climbing: Railay is renowned for its stunning limestone cliffs, making it a premier destination for rock climbing. Both beginners and experienced climbers can find routes here, catering to all skill levels. There are also local climbing schools who offer guided climbs and equipment rentals.
Kayaking: If you want something less exhilarating, then Railay is also perfect for kayaking. Here you can paddle along the calm, clear waters and enjoy the views of the limestone cliffs and nearby islands.
Hiking: Spending time at the beach doesn’t purely involve sea and sand. If you fancy some exploring, there are a number of hiking trails around Railay Beach, which offer spectacular views of the surrounding area. In particular, you can hike to Railay Viewpoint for panoramic views of the bay and cliffs. This is a real unique perspective and the views are breath taking.
Snorkeling: The clear waters around Railay are excellent for snorkeling. You can snorkel around the beach’s rocks and shallows for a chance to see colourful fish and other marine life.
Sunset viewing: This item pretty much appears on every single one of these beaches. You can’t have a bad sunset in Thailand, and Railay is no exception. The sunsets here are spectacular! You can find a comfortable spot on the beach, grab a drink, and watch the sky transition. There’s nothing else like it!
How to get to Railay Beach
Getting to Railay Beach is relatively straightforward. However, it does involve a boat transfer as the beach is located on a peninsula and is not accessible by road.
Ao Nang is the most common departure point for boats to Railay Beach. From here, you’ll find numerous long-tail boats waiting along the shore line. These boats take tourists all across Krabi Province, so find one heading to Railay Beach. Boats run frequently throughout the day and the journey takes about 10-15 minutes. Costs range from 100-150 Thai baht (£2 – £3) per person. Always confirm the price before boarding.
When to visit Railay Beach
The best time to visit Railay Beach and experience one of the best beaches in Krabi for yourself is during the dry season. This offers the best weather conditions, plenty of sunshine, lower humidity and minimal rainfall. The dry season falls between November to March. During this time, temperatures will range from 28°C to 32°C (82°F to 90°F). The Andaman Sea is calm at this time, making it perfect for beach activities, snorkeling, and boat trips.
If you visit during December to February, this is peak of the season. However, accommodation prices will likely be higher, lower availability and more crowds. We visited on the tail-end of November and as you can see we had a lot of the beach to ourselves, which was bliss!
Other times to consider
You can also visit during the shoulder season (April and October). If you prefer fewer crowds and don’t mind the possibility of occasional rain, the weather is still generally good, and prices for accommodation might be lower.
If you’re really looking to enjoy beach life in Thailand, then just be sure to avoid the monsoon season. This happens between May and October. This period sees heavy rainfall, higher humidity and rougher seas.
2. Ao Nang Beach
Ao Nang Beach is another one of the best beaches in Krabi, known for its lively atmosphere, stunning views, and easy accessibility. Unlike the secluded Railay Beach, Ao Nang is directly accessible by road from Krabi Town, making it a convenient base for exploring the Krabi region. It may be the busiest and most popular beach in Krabi, but it’s no less beautiful. The beach itself stretches along the coastline, offering a beautiful mix of powdery sands and clear waters. It’s a bustling area with a variety of shops, restaurants, and bars, offering a perfect blend of beach relaxation and vibrant nightlife.
Things to do at Ao Nang Beach
Island hopping: Located at the bottom of Krabi Town, Ao Nang is the gateway to many of Krabi’s famous islands, such as Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Yao Yai/Noi and more. This accessibility is just one reason why this is one of the best beaches in Krabi. Long-tail boats are readily available along the beach, making it easy and super accessible to explore these beautiful locations.
Water sports: If you want to do something a bit more active than just sunbathing, then Ao Nang has plenty to offer! From jet skiing and parasailing to paddleboarding! The calm waters make it an ideal location for both beginners and enthusiasts alike.
Beach hopping: It’s not just far off islands you can explore by long-tail. From Ao Nang, you can also visit many of Krabi’s other beautiful beaches, only accessible by boat. Hop in a long-tail and spend the day at Railay, Tonsai or Phra Nang Beach.
Explore the Ao Nang strip & Krabi Town: Ao Nang’s main strip runs parallel to the beach, while Krabi Town heads down towards it. This whole area is packed with shops, restaurants and cafes. You are spoilt for choice here! It’s the perfect spot to grab some souvenirs or a bite to eat. In the evening, Krabi Town’s vendors line the streets with street food stalls. The beachfront bars along Ao Nang strip are also the perfect place to watch the sunset.
How to get to Ao Nang Beach
If you’re coming from Krabi Town, or Krabi International Airport, you can take a taxi, tuk-tuk or shuttle bus (if your hotel offers it) directly to Ao Nang. If you’re staying in Krabi Town, then Ao Nang is also walkable, just a few minutes down the road. Once you arrive, you’ll find that Ao Nang is very walkable, with most of the main attractions, activities, shops and eateries located either along, or very close to the beach.
When to visit Ao Nang Beach
Like Railay Beach, the best time to visit Ao Nang Beach is during the dry season, from November to March. This period offers the best weather for beach activities, with plenty of sunshine and calm seas. Temperatures range from 28°C to 32°C (82°F to 90°F), making it ideal for enjoying the beach and exploring the nearby islands.
If you prefer to avoid the peak tourist season but still want good weather, visit during the shoulder seasons in April or October. You’ll experience fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. However, there may be occasional rain.
It’s best to avoid visiting during the monsoon season (May to October), when heavy rainfall, high humidity, and rough seas can limit activities and make conditions less favourable for beachgoers.
Benefits of staying near Ao Nang
One of the major benefits of staying in Ao Nang is its proximity to the main strip in Krabi. This area is filled with everything you might need, from convenience stores and currency exchange services, to bars, cafes and supermarkets. It’s an ideal location for both short and extended stays. The lively atmosphere means there’s always something to do, whether it’s grabbing a meal at a beachfront restaurant, shopping for local crafts, or enjoying the nightlife. Plus, with so many tour operators based in Ao Nang, organising excursions to explore the surrounding islands and attractions is a breeze.
3. Phra Nang Beach
Phra Nang Beach is undoubtedly one of the best beaches in Krabi. It was definitely our favourite when we visited! Located on the Railay Peninsula, this stunning beach is the jewel of Krabi. With pristine white sands, turquoise waters, dramatic caves and limestone cliffs. This beach has it all! Only accessible by boat, Phra Nang Beach holds a serene and secluded atmosphere. Although there’s lots to see and do in the area, it’s also the perfect spot if all you want to do is enjoy uninterrupted sea views, relax and recharge.
Things to do at Phra Nang Beach
Visit the Princess Cave (Phra Nang Cave): This cave, known as Tham Phra Nang Nok, is a sacred site filled with offerings. But not just any type of offering. The cave is filled with phallic gifts to the spirit of a mythical princess believed to cure infertility issues. Fishermen and boatmen also leave offerings of incense and flowers to ensure a safe journey. This cave has become such a pilgrimage that it has become a must see attraction in its own right.
Rock climbing: Railay might be the holy grail for rock climbers in the area, but Phra Nang is a strong contender. With its towering limestone cliffs, it has routes for all skill levels. Local climbing schools also provide guided climbs and equipment rentals, making it super easy to get started!
Kayaking: The calm clear waters of Phra Nang are perfect for kayaking. You can rent a kayak and paddle along the coastline, exploring hidden coves, caves, and nearby islands. Many of which are only accessible by boat or kayak.
Relax and recharge: The best way to enjoy Phra Nang Beach is simply to relax and take in the surroundings. The soft, powdery sand and clear waters make it the perfect spot to sunbathe, swim and relax. Offering a more relaxed vibe than Railay, the tranquil atmosphere is ideal for unwinding. The sunset from Phra Nang beach is also particularly beautiful.
Rayavadee Resort & Grotto Restaurant
Treat yourself to something truly unique book a stay at the Rayavadee Resort and dinner at the Grotto Restaurant. The restaurant is located within a limestone cave and is only available to hotel guests at the luxurious Rayavadee Resort. However, the experience is a once in a lifetime, where you to enjoy a delicious meal, surrounded by natural rock formations and overlooking a beautiful view of the beach. The restaurant offers a mix of Thai and international cuisine.
The Rayavadee Resort itself is an iconic hotel nestled within the lush greenery and limestone cliffs of the Railay Peninsula. The resort offers luxury accommodations with stunning views, providing an unparalleled experience. Staying at Rayavadee gives you direct access to Phra Nang Beach, along with the resort’s private pools, spas, and fine dining options. It’s worth treating yourself, even if just for one night!
How to get to Phra Nang Beach
Like Railay, Phra Nang Beach is accessible only by boat. The most common departure point is Ao Nang Beach, where you can easily catch a long-tail boat. The journey takes about 10-15 minutes and costs between 100-150 Thai baht (£2 – £3) per person. You can also reach Phra Nang Beach from Krabi Town or nearby beaches like Tonsai Beach.
When to visit Phra Nang Beach
Like the other beaches in this part of Thailand, the best time to visit Phra Nang Beach is during the dry season, from November to March. During this period, the weather is sunny, with warm temperatures ranging from 28°C to 32°C (82°F to 90°F). The calm seas make it perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and other water activities. If you visit during the peak season (December to February), be prepared for more visitors, where you’ll be less likely to have parts of the beach to yourself. As always, if you’re looking to avoid crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons in April or October.
4. Poda Island
Poda Island, known locally as Koh Poda, is one of the best beaches in Krabi for those seeking a serene escape. You know those postcard pictures you see of pure white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters? That is exactly Poda Island. Just a short boat ride from Ao Nang, this small, picturesque island is famous for beaches, with Thailand’s iconic limestone karsts rising from the sea.
Located within the National Park, Koh Poda is just 1km long and 200 meters wide. Despite its small size, Poda Island is known for its stunning natural beauty and is a haven for beach lovers. The island is completely undeveloped, offering a tranquil place to relax and swim.
Things to do on Poda Island
Snorkeling: The waters around Poda Island are teeming with vibrant marine life, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling. The coral reefs just off the beach are home to a variety of colourful fish and other sea creatures. You can bring your own snorkeling gear, or rent some on the mainland.
Beautiful beaches: Poda Island is surrounded by a white sandy beach, which is its main attraction. Fringed by trees and leafy plants, the beach stretches around most of the island. The clear, calm waters are ideal for a refreshing dip. While the soft, sandy beach provides plenty of space to lay down your towel and relax. The beach faces the limestone karst, offering breathtaking views that make for a stunning backdrop as you soak up the sun.
Picnicking: The island’s serene environment makes it a great spot for a beach picnic. Pack some snacks and drinks, and enjoy a leisurely meal with a view of the Andaman Sea. There are shaded areas beneath the trees where you can escape the sun and enjoy your lunch surrounded by nature. Just be sure to clean up afterwards and take all rubbish back with you to help preserve the island’s pristine condition.
Exploring the Island: Although small, Poda Island is worth exploring on foot. A walk around the island’s coastline will reveal hidden coves, stunning rock formations, and more beautiful beaches. It’s a peaceful way to experience the island’s natural beauty away from the more popular spots.
How to get to Poda Island
Getting to Poda Island is very easy! The most common departure point is Ao Nang Beach, where long-tail boats are readily available. The journey takes around 25-30 minutes and costs approximately 300-400 Thai baht (£7-£9) for a round trip per person. Boats usually run frequently throughout the day, especially during the high season.
Poda Island is also a popular stop on island-hopping tours, which often include visits to nearby Chicken Island and Tup Island (also listed below). You can read about our experiences of Krabi’s 4 island tour here.
When to visit Poda Island
The best time to visit Poda Island is during Krabi’s dry season, from November to March. During these months, you’ll experience sunny weather, calm seas, and minimal rainfall, making it perfect for beach activities like swimming and snorkeling. The temperatures range between 28°C and 32°C (82°F to 90°F), creating ideal conditions for enjoying the island’s beauty.
If you prefer fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons in April or October. However, it’s wise to check the weather forecast, as occasional rain showers can occur during these times.
Environmental respect on Poda Island
Poda Island is a protected area within the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. It’s therefore crucial to be respectful of the environment. The island’s ecosystem is fragile, so please refrain from touching or stepping on coral and be mindful of the impact of sunscreen on marine life by using reef-safe products. Your efforts will help ensure that Poda Island remains a beautiful and unspoiled destination for all!
Other things to consider
Entry Fee: As part of the National Park, there is a small entry fee to visit Poda Island. This fee is typically around 400 Thai baht (£9) for adults and 200 Thai baht (£4.50) for children. The fee helps support conservation efforts and maintain the island’s facilities. If you visit as part of an organised tour, the cost for this will usually be included.
Facilities: Keep in mind that Poda Island is relatively undeveloped. It has some basic facilities such as restrooms. There are however no shops or restaurants on the island, so bring everything you need for your visit, including food, drinks, and snorkeling gear.
5. Chicken Island
Chicken Island, or Koh Gai (sometimes spelled Koh Kai or Koh Hua Khwan), is one of Krabi’s most iconic and unique islands. Named due to a peculiar rock formation that resembles a chicken’s head, this small island is a popular stop on island-hopping tours from Ao Nang. With its crystal-clear waters, vibrant marine life, and fascinating geological features, Chicken Island is one of the best beaches in Krabi to visit for a memorable day trip. Whether you’re into snorkeling, exploring natural sandbars, or simply marveling at the island’s unusual shape, Chicken Island offers something special for everyone.
Things to do on Chicken Island
Snorkeling: Chicken Island is a fantastic spot for snorkeling, thanks to its clear waters and abundant coral reefs. The island is surrounded by shallow reefs teeming with colourful fish and other marine creatures, making it a perfect destination for both beginners and experienced snorkelers. The best snorkeling spots are on the north side of the island, where the coral is most vibrant.
Exploring the sandbar: One of the most unique features of Chicken Island is the sandbar that connects it to neighboring Tup Island. Known as Talay Waek, or the “Separated Sea,” this sandbar emerges during low tide, allowing visitors to walk between the islands.
Swimming and Sunbathing: The calm, warm waters around Chicken Island make it an ideal spot for swimming. You can relax on the sandy beach, take a refreshing dip, or simply enjoy the sun while taking in the stunning views of the surrounding islands. The beach area is small but uncrowded, providing a peaceful escape.
Island-Hopping: Chicken Island is often included in island-hopping tours from Ao Nang, which typically also visit Poda Island, Tup Island, and Phra Nang Cave Beach. Known as a 4 Island Tour, these tours are a convenient way to see multiple beautiful locations in one day! Having done this ourselves, we definitely recommend this, as you’ll also get to uncover some hidden gems along the way too.
How to get to Chicken Island
Chicken Island is easily accessible by long-tail boat from Ao Nang Beach or Railay Beach. It takes about 20-30 minutes from Ao Nang and is usually part of a day tour package that includes other nearby islands. Facilities: Chicken Island is mostly undeveloped, with no shops or restaurants. Basic restroom facilities are available, but it’s a good idea to bring your own snacks, water, and beach essentials.
6. Tup Island
Tup Island, also known as Koh Tap or Koh Thap, is one of the most picturesque spots in Krabi and a must-visit destination if you’re ticking off the best beaches in Krabi.
This small, tranquil island is part of the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park and is famous for its stunning sandbar that connects it to nearby Chicken Island and Mor Island during low tide. The island’s serene atmosphere and crystal-clear waters make it a perfect escape for sunbathing, swimming, and exploring. There are also resident monkeys on this island – so be careful of your belongings! When we visited a couple had their bag rifled through by a mischievous monkey!
Things to do on Tup Island
Sandbar Walk (Talay Waek): Tup Island is all about beach vibes and relaxing. This is a little piece of paradise in the middle of the ocean. The highlight of Tup Island is the Talay Waek, or “Separated Sea” sandbar. During low tide, this natural sandbar emerges, connecting Tup Island to Chicken Island and Mor Island. You can walk between the islands, and the sandbar is an excellent spot for photography, with the stunning Andaman Sea surrounding you.
Swimming and Sunbathing: The clear, shallow waters around Tup Island are perfect for swimming and wading. The beach, though small, offers soft white sand and plenty of space to relax and soak up the sun. The calm, turquoise waters make it ideal for those looking to unwind somewhere peaceful.
Snorkeling: While not as extensive as the reefs at nearby Chicken Island, the waters around Tup Island still offer good snorkeling opportunities. You can find various colourful fish and some coral formations close to the sandbar, making it a great spot for a quick snorkeling session.

The temperature typically ranges from 28°C to 32°C (82°F to 90°F), making it ideal for beach activities and island-hopping.
Other things to know
Entry Fee: As with Chicken Island, there is an entry fee for visiting Tup Island, as it is part of the national park. This fee is generally included in tour packages and is 400 Thai baht (£9) for adults and 200 Thai baht (£4.50) for children.
Facilities: Facilities on Tup Island are very basic. There are no shops, restaurants, or accommodations on the island, so be sure to bring any essentials, such as water, snacks, and sun protection.
Other islands you can visit in the region
Krabi is a paradise for island lovers, with many stunning beaches and islands to explore across the region. If you’re looking to discover more of the best beaches in Krabi to visit, here are three other beautiful locations that offer tranquillity, natural beauty, and plenty of activities.
Hong Island
Hong Island, or Koh Hong, is a must-visit destination for those looking to experience one of Krabi’s most beautiful islands. Famous for its lagoon, white sandy beaches, and vibrant coral reefs, Hong Island offers a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. The island’s main beach is a serene spot to sunbathe and swim, while the hidden lagoon, surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, is a well worth an explore!
Hong Island is only accessible by long-tail boat or speedboat, which you can get from Ao Nang. The journey takes around 30-40 minutes. Many tour operators also offer full-day island-hopping packages that include Hong Island. The best time to visit Hong Island is during the dry season, from November to March.
Tonsai Beach
A hidden gem on the Railay Peninsula. Tonai Beach is often overshadowed by its famous neighbours, but it offers a peaceful escape. Located between East and West Railay, this small beach is less crowded and provides a quiet spot to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Krabi. With its soft sand, clear waters, and surrounding limestone cliffs, Tonai Beach is perfect for those looking to unwind in a serene setting.
Tonai Beach is easily accessible by foot from Railay Beach, or long-tail from Ao Nang. It’s a short walk from either East or West Railay, making it an easy stop if you’re exploring the Railay Peninsula. Like the rest of Railay, the best time to visit Tonai Beach is during the dry season, from November to March, when the weather is at its best.
Tubkaek Beach
Located about 30 minutes north of Ao Nang, Tubkaek Beach offers stunning views of the Hong Islands and is known for its peaceful atmosphere. It’s an ideal location for a romantic getaway, with several luxury resorts along the shore that provide the perfect setting for relaxation and rejuvenation. For those feeling more adventurous, a hike up Dragon Crest Mountain (Ngon Nak) offers panoramic views of the entire area, including the Andaman Sea and surrounding islands.
Tubkaek Beach is about a 30-minute drive from Ao Nang or Krabi Town. You can reach it by taxi, rental, or as part of a day tour that includes nearby attractions like Hong Island. Like the rest of Krabi Province, the best time to visit Tubkaek Beach is during the dry season, from November to March.
Enjoying and respecting Krabi’s best beaches
When enjoying the stunning natural beauty of Krabi’s beaches, it’s essential to respect and preserve the environment for future visitors. Practice the “leave no trace” principle by taking all your rubbish with you, avoiding the use of single-use plastics, and disposing of waste properly. Be mindful of the local wildlife by not disturbing animals or their habitats and refrain from touching or removing coral and marine life. Overtourism can have a significant impact on these fragile ecosystems, so always tread lightly, stay on marked paths, and support sustainable tourism practices. By being respectful and responsible, we can help ensure that Krabi’s natural wonders remain pristine for generations to come.
